Conductive Flooring

The Cost of Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)

In an increasingly technological age, the familiar shock of static electricity we may receive in the normal course of living can actually be an expensive challenge in many industrial environments.

Static electricity and electrostatic discharge, or ESD, is extremely hot, even though we usually don’t feel too much heat from a static shock. However, in industries where electronic components or volatile chemicals are involved, ESD can damage electronic components, ignite flammable mixtures, attract contaminants in clean environments and cause injury to workers.
The cost of ESD damage includes loss of production time, repair and rework, not to mention employee safety issues.

Reducing Losses Due to ESD and Static Electricity

Manufacturers of electronic devices and companies that handle volatile chemicals incorporate measures to prevent ESD events throughout the manufacturing, testing, shipping and handling processes. These protective environments are known as Electrostatic Protective Areas (EPAs). Whether a small work station or a large manufacturing area, in an EPA, all conductive materials and workers are grounded to prevent charge build-up on ESD sensitive components. Some preventative measures include:

  • ESD-control footwear and uniform gear
  • Anti-static floor mats
  • ESD-safe packing material
  • Humidity control to prevent electrostatic charge generation
  • Flooring materials that move harmful electric charges away from the work area

Conductive flooring Systems from Surface Solutions are epoxy-based, formulated to control static electricity and highly resistant to chemical damage and abrasion. In addition, they provide a protective flooring surface for facilities built for the production and storage of sensitive electronic components by transferring harmful static charges into the ground, protecting both equipment and personnel.

Proof of Performance

CABLE MANUFACTURER – INDIANAPOLIS, IN – SS181 EPOXY – CASE STUDY

Surface Solutions hand-tapes line striping, applying it with a roller rather than a machine, and the results look amazing. When an Indianapolis high-performance cable manufacturer wants to correct 2,600 square feet of concrete aisle way flooring, they turn to a fellow Indy-based company, Surface Solutions Inc., for assistance. They are dissatisfied with the floor’s appearance…

Spotlight on Surface Preparation

The long life of your new floor depends on it. If you are wondering why your reasonably new concrete flooring system is not lasting as long as you expect, one of the causes may point to inadequate surface preparation before installation. Improperly prepared surfaces affect adhesion and accounts for up to 80% of all application…
