Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits/uses of epoxy flooring?

Concrete is a porous substrate susceptible to damage from water, chemicals, and abrasion. Epoxy is applied to concrete for protection, resurfacing, aestehic enhancement, hardening, or supplemental functionality. Epoxy flooring systems range from 1/2″ resurfacing to thin film coatings. With a variety of epoxy resins, aggregates, and thicknesses custom tailored to each environment, epoxy is the most diverse industrial flooring system that can value engineered to meet the demands of nearly every environment within a facility. The advantages of epoxy as a resinous flooring system include best value, excellent wear, chemical resistance, cleanability, and abrasion resistance. However epoxy does not excel in environments that are subject to thermal shock, steam or continuous hot water cleaning, short turn around times, and heavy impact.

Are there any drawbacks to epoxy? What are the alternatives to epoxy?

Although epoxies excel as an industrial flooring solution for most environments, epoxies are not a viable option in environments that are subject to thermal shock, steam or continuous hot water cleaning, and heavy impact. These conditions that are typical of food and beverage facilities require urethane concrete/cementitious urethane. Urethane concrete is designed to meet the harsh environments of  the food and beverage industry. Surface Solutions is a certified contractor for BASF UCRETE, the orginal urethane concrete flooring system. Contact Surface Solutions to speak with an expert consultant to hear about the benefits of urethane concrete over epoxy.

Why is my epoxy coating system failing in my facility? What makes Surface Solutions different from its competitors?

Epoxy coating systems can fail for a variety of reasons that are difficult to determine to the untrained eye and without concrete substrate testing. Every concrete substrate is different making each situation unique. Some of the most common reasons for epoxy coatings failure is moisure vapor transmission, substrate contamination, and inadequate surface preparation. Surface Solutions will evaluate, test, and analyze your concrete substrate to determine the reason for epoxy flooring failure. Once the analysis is complete Surface Solutions will use this information to choose from over a dozen resinous flooring manufacturers to find the appropriate polymer flooring solutions for your facility.

Do you sell Epoxy? Can I install the epoxy myself?

Surface Solutions sells the same epoxy materials we install. Thin film epoxy coating systems and epoxy patching materials are possible to install without a professional resinous flooring contractor. However, higher build epoxy coating systems and 1/8″ – 1/2″ resurfacing systems are better suited to be installed by a professional industrial flooring contractor. These systems require expensive, intensive surface preparation equipment and installation techniques to ensure a successful, quality, long lasting epoxy flooring system. Contact Surface Solutions to discuss your flooring project with an expert consultant.

What maintenance is required for epoxy flooring systems? How long will an epoxy system last?

Epoxy flooring systems are seamless and designed to be easy to maintain. Type and method of cleaning is unique to each epoxy flooring system and environment. If certain cleaners and chemicals are required to be used in your facility, Surface Solutions will customize a resinous flooring system to fit your needs. The longevity of an epoxy flooring system is based on numerous factors including: the flooring system itself, type and amount of traffic, chemical exposure, and cleaning procedures. For example, a light duty truck used to pull an 8,000lb truck will not have the same life as a heavy duty truck pulling the same load. Likewise, a thin film coating system will not have the life in a heavy industrial manufacturing facility as a 1/4″ epoxy flooring system. Contact Surface Solutions to speak with an expert consultant on the appropriate epoxy flooring system for your facility.
