Crack Treatment

Random cracking may occur from time to time due to settlement in the concrete slab, corrosion of rebar in the slab, shrinkage of the concrete pour, or overloading at certain points. Treating cracks is a necessary step in the preparation of concrete for an industrial flooring system. There are two types of cracks that need to be treated prior to installation of the flooring system: static cracks and dynamic cracks. Static cracks are dormant or non-moving and are treated by chasing the crack with a saw and filled with the same material as the industrial flooring system. Dynamic cracks are dynamic or moving and are treated in different ways depending on depth and frequency. In the event dynamic cracks are abundant within the substrate, a flexible membrane should be installed to absorb crack movements. Conversely, if the dynamic cracks are sparse within the substrate they are treated by chasing the crack with a saw and filled with a semi-rigid sealant. Failure to treat cracks prior to the installation can cause industrial flooring systems to crack, that’s why Surface Solutions treats all cracks prior to the installation of the system.
